Zebra Plant
(Aphelandra squarrosa)
Intermediate - Beautiful, rewarding... and slightly opinionated. Humidity and consistent moisture make a big difference with this one.
Personality
High standards. Excellent wardrobe. The glamorous diva of the tropical plant shelf. She's gorgeous. She knows.
Water Needs
Prefers consistently lightly moist soil during active growth. Don't allow it to dry out completely, but don't leave it sitting in soggy soil either.
Key indicator: Drooping leaves can mean it's thirsty - and Zebra Plants aren't particularly subtle about it.
Light Needs
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid strong direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage.
Think: "Bright and flattering, please. I have standards."
Pet Safe?
Yes. Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Things to watch for
Dry air, crispy leaf edges, underwatering, overwatering, spider mites and cold drafts. Basically, it would like tropical conditions without actually having to move to Brazil.

Q. Is it fussy?
A. Let's say it has... preferences.
Plant Lore & fun facts
The Zebra Plant gets its name from the brilliant white veins streaking across its dark green leaves.
But the foliage isn't its only trick. When mature and happy, it can produce a spectacular golden-yellow flower bract that rises above the leaves like a tiny tropical crown. Because apparently the striped foliage wasn't attention-grabbing enough.
