Succulents

(Various species)

Beginner Friendly Experience Level - Perfect for busy people, forgetful people, and people who accidentally love their plants a little too much.

Personality

Thrives on neglect. The independent free spirits of the plant world. They appreciate your company, but they definitely don't need constant attention. In fact, they'd prefer if you stopped hovering.

Water Needs

Less is more. Allow the soil to dry completely before watering thoroughly. Then leave it alone until it's dry again.

Key indicator: Slightly wrinkled leaves often mean it's thirsty.

Most succulents would rather miss a watering than receive one too many.

Light Needs

Most succulents thrive in bright light and love sunny windows. The more sunlight they receive, the more compact and colorful they tend to stay.

Think: "Move me closer to the sun. No, closer."

Pet Safe?

Depends on variety - Some succulents, such as Haworthia, are generally pet-friendly. Others, including Jade Plants and many Euphorbias, are not.

When in doubt, always research the specific variety.

Things to watch for

Overwatering (the #1 succulent killer)
Mushy stems or leaves
Poor drainage
Stretching toward light (called etiolation)
Pots without drainage holes

If a succulent could leave a note, it would probably say: "Please stop watering me. I'm still processing the last watering."

Common questions

Q: Why is my succulent getting tall?
A: It's reaching for more sunlight. This is called etiolation.

Q. Why are the leaves falling off?
A. Overwatering is usually the culprit.

Q. Can I grow succulents indoors?
A. Absolutely - as long as they receive enough light.

Q. Do succulents need tiny pots?
A. Not necessarily. They simply need excellent drainage.

Q. Why do people kill succulents so often?
A. Because they love them too much.

Plant Lore & fun facts

Succulents evolved in some of the harshest environments on Earth.

Their thick leaves act like tiny water tanks, allowing them to survive long periods without rain.

Because of this, many succulents have developed fascinating colors, textures, and shapes that look almost too perfect to be real.

Some varieties produce a powdery coating called farina, which acts like natural sunscreen.

Nature really thought of everything.
