Pothos Plant

Pothos

(Epipremnum Aureum)

The ultimate Beginner Experience Level - low drama, fast growing, and always willing to start over. If you're new to houseplants, Pothos is one of the best teachers you'll ever have.

Personality

The optimistic wanderer of the plant world. Give it a windowsill, a bookshelf, or a forgotten corner, and it'll happily start exploring. Easygoing, adaptable, and always ready to grow wherever life plants it.

Water Needs

Prefers a drink after it's had time to dry out. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

Key indicator: Slightly droopy leaves usually mean it's time for a drink.

Generally happy with weekly-ish watering, depending on the season and your home's conditions.

Light Needs

Will happily live in low light, but secretly thrives in bright, indirect sunshine. More light encourages faster growth and more vibrant variegation, especially in highly patterned varieties.

Think: "I can survive in the shade, but I'd really love a sunny seat by the window."

Pet Safe?

NO - Pothos plants are considered toxic to cats and dogs. They contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if ingested. While rarely life-threatening, they can cause significant discomfort and should be kept out of reach of curious pets.

Things to watch for

Too much love (overwatering can lead to soggy roots)
Tiny freeloaders like spider mites or mealybugs
Long, sparse vines if it isn't getting enough light
Yellow leaves from consistently wet soil

Fortunately, Pothos are incredibly forgiving and bounce back surprisingly well from most mistakes.

Common questions

Q. Why are my pothos leaves turning yellow?
A. Usually too much water. Let the soil dry out a bit more between waterings.

Q. Can I grow pothos in water?
A. Absolutely! Pothos are famous for rooting easily and can live in water for quite a long time with occasional nutrient supplementation.

Q. Why are the new leaves smaller?
A. Your pothos may be asking for more light, nutrients, or room to grow.

Q. Can I trim my pothos?
A. Please do! Pruning encourages fuller growth and gives you plenty of cuttings to propagate.

Q. Why does everyone recommend pothos to beginners?
A. Because pothos are the plant equivalent of a supportive best friend. They forgive mistakes, recover quickly, and always seem to root for your success.

Plant Lore & fun facts

Known affectionately as "Devil's Ivy," pothos earned its nickname because it's incredibly difficult to kill and seems determined to keep growing no matter what.

Native to the tropical forests of the Solomon Islands, pothos vines naturally climb trees and wander across forest floors in search of sunlight.

Their heart-shaped leaves and trailing vines have made them favorites in homes, offices, classrooms, dorm rooms, and practically anywhere a little greenery is welcome.

In some traditions, pothos are considered symbols of prosperity, good fortune, and steady abundance—perhaps because they have a habit of thriving where they're planted.
