Potted Ficus Plant

Ficus

(Ficus spp.)

Intermediate Experience Level - Not particularly difficult, but Ficus plants appreciate consistency. If you're the type who rearranges furniture every weekend, your Ficus may have opinions.

Personality

The sophisticated houseplant that appreciates routine, good lighting, and a stable living situation. Elegant, timeless, and just a little bit dramatic about change.

Water Needs

Likes the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before giving it another drink.

Key indicator: Drooping leaves may mean it's thirsty. Yellow leaves often mean it's getting too much water.

Generally happy with watering every 1–2 weeks depending on the season and light conditions.

Light Needs

Prefers bright, indirect light and plenty of it. Some varieties can handle a little direct morning sun, but most are happiest near a bright window.

Think: "I love sunshine. I just don't love surprises." Once you find a happy spot, try not to move it too often.

Pet Safe?

NO - Most Ficus varieties are considered toxic to cats and dogs if ingested and may also cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

Things to watch for

Sudden leaf drop
Overwatering
Drafts
Low light
Frequent relocation

Ficus plants often respond to environmental changes by dropping leaves. This is their preferred method of filing complaints.

Common questions

Q. Why is my Ficus dropping leaves?
A. Ficus plants protest change. Usually because something changed. Light, temperature, watering, location, humidity, the phase of the moon... okay, maybe not the moon, but Ficus plants definitely notice change.

Q. Can I move my Ficus?
A. You can, but expect a brief adjustment period and possibly some leaf drop.

Q. Why does everyone say Ficus plants are dramatic?
A. Because they often respond to minor inconveniences by throwing leaves on the floor.

Q. Will the leaves grow back?
A. Usually yes! Once conditions stabilize, new growth often follows.

Q. Do Ficus plants like being rootbound?
A. Slightly snug is fine, but eventually they'll appreciate an upgrade.
