Aglaonema

Aglaonema

(Aglaonema spp.)

Beginner Friendly - Adaptable, forgiving, and a fantastic choice for someone who wants colorful foliage without Calathea-level negotiations.

Personality

Looks expensive. Surprisingly low-maintenance. Colorful, adaptable, and perfectly content hanging out in a quieter corner while the needier plants fight over the good window.

Water Needs

Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering thoroughly. Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet.

Key indicator: Slightly drooping leaves usually mean it's ready for a drink.

Light Needs

Prefers medium to bright, indirect light, although greener varieties tolerate lower light surprisingly well. Highly variegated pink, red, or white varieties appreciate brighter indirect light to maintain their color.

Think: "Good lighting is appreciated, but I'm not fighting the Monstera for the window."

Pet Safe?

No. Aglaonema contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested.

Things to watch for

Overwatering, cold drafts, yellowing leaves, mealybugs and spider mites. Variegated varieties can also lose some of their beautiful coloration in very low light.

Common questions

Q. Can Aglaonema really live in low light?
A. Yes, especially greener varieties—but "tolerate" and "prefer" aren't quite the same thing. It'll usually grow better with some indirect light.

Q. Why are my leaves turning yellow?
A. Overwatering is a common culprit.

Q. Why is my pink Aglaonema becoming greener?
A. It may need brighter indirect light to maintain its coloration.

Q. Is it difficult?
A. Not at all. It's one of the easier tropical foliage plants.

Q. Will it forgive me if I forget a watering?
A. Usually. However - the Calathea across the room will be appalled, but Aglaonema will probably move on.

Plant Lore & fun facts

Aglaonemas are native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and New Guinea, where they naturally grow beneath the forest canopy.

Their ability to tolerate lower light has made them longtime favorites for homes and offices. Basically, nature designed a tropical plant that understands not everyone has floor-to-ceiling windows.
